Pre-purchase examinations are a comprehensive examination. The intention is to gather information on the horse and provide it to you in a way you can use it to decide if purchase is right for you. You will get a full report after the examination including a summary of any abnormal findings which were found on exam.
Our veterinarians DO NOT pass or fail a horse. We are working for the BUYER only and the BUYER owns all exam findings. Payment is expected at completion of exam.
Pre-Purchase Examination components
**Comprehensive physical examination including body condition evaluation and auscultation of the horse’s heart and lungs prior to and after exercise.
**Full palpation of horse including neck, back and all limbs
**Hoof testing/hoof conformation assessment
**Neurological evaluation
**Dental and age check- we do not placea speculum in the horse unless specifically requested. All horses require sedation to have a comprehensive oral examination performed and this sedation MUST be authorized by the SELLER.
**Eye and vision check
**Full soundness evaluation including examination of horse on lunge line and in straight lines. Flexions of all limbs to be performed. We prefer to have soft and hard ground to perform our gait analysis.
Additional recommended services which will incur additional charges
**Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA/Coggins) Testing is advised unless SELLER can provide a current negative Coggins, dated within 1 year.
**Pre-purchase drug testing is always recommended for every exam but is not required. Drug testing is sent to a reference laboratory; turnaround time is generally 2-3 business days.
**Radiographs- we will bring our digital radiograph machine to all pre-purchase examinations; specific recommended views vary on the BUYER intended use of horse as well as any findings on the exam. Navicular views REQUIRE shoe removal; no exceptions. We are not able to replace shoes after removing them; this must be arranged by the SELLER and BUYER
**Lab/blood testing- we can send blood out for baseline testing such as/not limited to: endocrine or metabolic testing (insulin, ACTH, leptin, etc), Complete Blood Count (CBC) and/or Biochemistry, or other desired tests. These tests are sent to a reference laboratory; turnaround time is generally 1-3 business days.
